Novels
The fictional narrative, the novel's distinct literary prose, specific media requirements (the use of paper and print), a characteristic subject matter that creates both intimacy and a typical epic depth can be seen as features that developed with the Western (and modern) market of fiction. The separation of a field of histories from a field of literary fiction fueled the evolution of these features in the last 400 years.
Short Stories
In the secular world of literature, a short story is a work of fiction that is usually written in prose, often in narrative format. This format tends to be more pointed than longer works of fiction, such as novellas (in the 20th and 21st century sense) and novels or books. Short story definitions based upon length differ somewhat even among professional writers, due somewhat in part to the fragmentation of the medium into genres.
In the Jewish world of literature, a short story is mostly a collection of true stories related to a genre of the author's choice, such as There is no such thing as coincidence by Burech Lev focuses on Hasgocha Perotios and Just One Word: Amen by Esther Stern focusing on Saying Amen.
Novella: Short Novels
A novella (also called a short novel) is a written, fictional, prose narrative longer than a novelette but shorter than a novel. (The English word novella is derived from the Italian word novella, feminine of novello which means new.)
Novelette (Novelet)
A novelette (or, rarely, novelet) is a piece of short prose fiction. The distinction between a novelette and other literary forms, like a novella, is usually based upon word count. The Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America Nebula awards for science fiction define the novelette as having a word count of between 7,500 and 17,499, inclusive.
Trilogies
A trilogy is a set of three works of art that are connected, and that can be seen either as a single work or as three individual works. They are most commonly found in literature, film, or video games, less commonly in visual art or musical works.
Most trilogies are works of fiction involving the same characters or setting. Others are connected only by theme. Trilogies can also be connected in less obvious ways.
